Additions to EASA Approval – Pilatus PC-12 and Gob 120TP

July 2017 – Reacting to its customers requirements has always been the cornerstone of Avalon Aero’s principles, such is this commitment that as of July 2017 Avalon Aero has added two new aircraft types to its EASA approval, the Pilatus PC 12 and Grob 120TP.

With the ability to carry out line and base maintenance on both aircraft types, the Grob 120TP has been added to support the Empire Test Pilot School at Boscombe Down, whilst the PC12 has been added to support the growing number of PC12’s transiting, or basing themselves, out of London Biggin Hill Airport.

Avalon Aero Increased Maintenance Support with QinetiQ, Boscombe Down

April 2017 – We are delighted to announce that the relationship between Avalon Aero and QinetiQ has been strengthened further this month. A multi-million Pound contract has been confirmed, which will increase Avalon Aero’ responsibilities at Boscombe Down until 2024.

With the emphasis on supporting QinetiQ’s Empire Test Pilot School (ETPS) training platform , this new contract will involve Avalon Aero in all line and base maintenance duties on QinetiQ’s two Avro RJ aircraft and Diamond DA42 aircraft, along with their latest acquisitions of two Pilatus PC-21 and two Grob 120TP aircraft, in its facility at MOD Boscombe Down.

This contract represents a key milestone achievement for Avalon Aero, and confirms our commitment to the ever changing requirements of our customers.

TCCA Approval Granted to Avalon Aero

July 2016 – Avalon Aero’s continued growth in the BAe 146 / Avro RJ market had increased further by receiving approval from the Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA), allowing Avalon Aero to carry out line and base maintenance on Canadian registered aircraft.

The Canadian market is one that Avalon Aero is keen to develop further, with its first base maintenance input slot being allocated to a Summit Air operated Avro RJ85, a passenger and cargo charter operator based throughout Canada, which is due to start imminently.

Positioning itself as a specialist maintenance provider for UK operated BAe 146 / Avro RJ, Avalon Aero are looking to continue this growth and support overseas operators.

Apprentice Win’s Award with The Resource Group

Ross Grady

26th April 2016 – Avalon Aero’s current first year apprentice, Ross O’Grady, today successfully graduated from his Aircraft Engineering course with The Resource Group, based at Kemble, UK. Ross has spent the past eight months honing his promising aviation skills working on a variety of aircraft, all within a theoretical and practical environment. On top of this success, Ross, who is based at Avalon Aero’s Biggin Hill facility, achieved the award for Best Hand Skills in his apprentice year.

Everyone at Avalon Aero passes on their congratulations to Ross, and look forward to seeing his skills develop further and his career flourish.

Ross O’Grady is the fourth apprentice Avalon Aero have employed over the past few years, following in the footsteps of his colleagues Matthew Robson, Matthew Gillies and Ben Chick.

New Approval Granted – Cessna Citation 550/551/560

September 2015 – Avalon Aero are pleased to announce the addition of the Cessna Citation 550/551 and 560 types to its EASA Part 145 approval for line and base maintenance services.

The addition of the Cessna Citation 550/551 and 560 is the result of growing demand, particularly at Biggin Hill Airport, where a number of owners and operators have expressed their desire for Avalon Aero to support their aircraft.

Avalon Aero Appointed Authorised Piaggio UK Service Centre

January 2015 – Avalon Aero have been selected as the only UK Authorised Service Centre for the Piaggio 180 series, including the Avanti P-180.

Utilising its facility at Biggin Hill Airport, UK, Avalon Aero will be able to carry out line and base maintenance for Piaggio 180 owners and operators under its Part 145 approval, as well as being able to provide spare part sales and Continuing Airworthiness Management services.

Working alongside Piaggio Aero and Mayfair based Connectjets, the official UK Dealer for Piaggio Aero, Avalon Aero are looking forward to supporting the growing popularity of the P180 series within the UK.

Aircraft G-CDYK (Avro 146-RJ85) and G-CIFG (Avro 146-RJ85) become the second and third aircraft to enter into this programme. Owned and managed by Falko, these aircraft will be stored and maintained before being leased out to operators around the world.

Avalon Aero Take Part in the Aviation Ironman Challenge to Raise Money for Know Dementia

May 2014 – Avalon Aero were invited to take part in the Aviation Ironman Challenge this month in aid of Know Dementia, a small but thoroughly worthwhile charity close to the events organisers, Tailored Aviation. The first of what is hoped will be annual event involved a 5km run (or brisk walk/ stagger/ slide) through an army style assault course, followed by a 200m lake swim and topped off with a 5km cross country bike ride. Avalon employees Chris and Lisa Glancey, along with honorary employee Martin Chappell, took up the challenge and despite a number of bumps, bruises, cuts and sprains completed the course and lived to tell the tale.

Thanks to everyones generosity a total of £855.50 was raised, a spectacular amount. Training for next year's event starts now!

Stratus Flying Charity launches a new medical charter charity flight service, Little-Wings

Founded by aviation professionals, Stratus Flying have started to make a real impact on number of worthy causes around the globe. Their founder, James Moon would like to share exciting news about its latest charitable innovation, Little Wings:

Continued Progress for Avalon Aero – First Falko aircraft arrives at Cranfield Airport, UK

30th January – Avalon Aero welcomes Avro 146-RJ85 (G-CFZM) into its storage maintenance programme at Cranfield Airport, UK.

Part of Falko Regional Aircraft Ltd's fleet portfolio, this aircraft marks the start of a new business relationship between Avalon Aero and Falko. John Glancey, Managing Director of Avalon Aero explained that “Falko are the leading aircraft asset management company for BAe 146 / Avro Regional Jets in the world, and our relationship with Falko, despite being at an early stage, marks a huge achievement for Avalon Aero and its ongoing aim of being a key maintenance operation for the 146 / Avro jet market in Europe”.

Hawker 700 / 800 Approval Gained

September 2013 – Avalon Aero have been granted approval to carry out line and base maintenance on the Hawker Beechcraft 700 / 800 series aircraft at its Biggin Hill Airport and Cranfield Airport facilities under it’s EASA PART 145.

Chris Glancey, General Manager, illustrates that this approval acquisition highlights and defines Avalon Aero’s ambition to provide excellent maintenance services to the bizjet market at affordable prices: “ The Hawker 700 and 800 aircraft complements the Hawker 1000 approval, which Avalon Aero have held for over two years, perfectly and we look forward to welcoming potential customers to both of our London vicinity facilities”.

Avalon Aero and Formula One Management Celebrates First BAe 146 in to Service

May 2013 – Returning from a trip to Nice this morning, the crew took time out to celebrate 30 years in service of its BAe 146, G-OFOA.

E1006, or its now Tail Registration G-OFOA, was the sixth BAe 146 off the production line, but the first aircraft to be delivered to launch customer, Dan Air at Gatwick airport. It first flew on 5th May 1983, was delivered on 23rd May and entered service on 27th May operating commercially throughout the UK. It was with Dan Air that Avalon Aero Managing Director John Glancey first laid hands on the aircraft as a Field Service Representative for BAE, not to know that over 15 years later he would be tending to the aircrafts mechanical needs once again, supporting current operator Formula One Management out of Biggin Hill Airport, Kent.

G-OFOA has flown thousands of F1 staff to Grand Prix all over Europe in the past 15 years, and has been maintained exclusively by Avalon Aero for the past 11 and although superseded by more technically advanced designs, particularly in the Formula One Management fleet, G-OFOA still fulfils the role it was bought for and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Avalon Aero continues to champion the BAe 146 to smaller regional operators, in particular to VIP and Special Mission operators due to its ease to fly and maintain as well as being a real financially efficient alternative to other aircraft in its field. With 378 aircraft sold during its 20 years of production, it makes it one of Britain's most successful commercial aircraft to date.

Exciting Times Ahead – Major Expansion For Avalon Aero at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, UK

16th May 2013 – UK based Avalon Aero are delighted to announce the acquisition of larger hangar premises at Cranfield Airport, Bedfordshire, to satisfy all major base checks and modifications on BAe 146 / Avro RJ aircraft, for current and future customers.

The maintenance facility, which is expected to be functional by late June and fully modernised by Summer 2014, is the next step Avalon Aero have taken to ensure it’s growing number of BAe 146 / Avro RJ customers can experience the full package of efficient and affordable maintenance and continuing airworthiness management that Avalon Aero have gained a strong reputation for over the past decade.

Martin Darling, Technical Director, explains that “Avalon Aero have picked the optimum time to develop, and are delighted that the relationship forged with Cranfield Airport has allowed us to push Avalon Aero into a great position to offer it’s growing customer base a maintenance facility that will fully cater to their requirements. This development will allow Avalon Aero to undertake all types of base maintenance, from an annual check to entire refurbishments, whilst still maintaining the business values we are known and respected for.”

Further to the hangar development, Avalon Aero will also support Cranfield Airport’s handling service which caters for business jet and corporate aircraft customers. John Glancey, Managing Director, said that “being selected to support Cranfield Airport with their business jet handling is a perfect fit, for the past four years Avalon Aero have developed it’s Biggin Hill Airport facility to cater for such aircraft and our staff have a good knowledge and understanding of customer expectations and wishes. Avalon Aero Receive BAe Systems Recognition

February 2013 – Avalon Aero receive “Best Performing Niche Market Organisation” award

During the recent BAe Systems Operators Conference in Edinburgh, Avalon Aero were presented with an award for the “Best Performing Niche Market Organisation”, an award which highlights Avalon Aero’s commitment to performing ‘above and beyond’ with special projects within the BAe 146 / RJ community.

Technical Director, Martin Darling was on hand to accept the award on behalf of Avalon Aero. Martin has headed up the team responsible for the ’in service’ support and modifications to the Atmospheric Research Aircraft and the two Avro RJs just entering service with QinentiQ and Empire Test Pilots School.

Well done to all the team, who’s hard work, experience and professional approach has now been recognized by others in the community.

Avalon Aero Granted MAOS Approval

August 2012 – The Ministry of Defence Military Aviation Authority has certified Avalon Aero Ltd as a Mil-145 Maintenance Organisation.

As of 15th August 2012 the MAOS 145.1203 approval reference allows Avalon Aero to undertake maintenance on military registered AVRO 146 RJ70 and RJ100 aircraft at its Boscombe Down site with immediate effect.

Whilst this has been a lengthy process, it has without doubt been very informative and rewarding, one that will increase Avalon Aero’s level of support to its military orientated client base.

The addition of the MAOS approval now complements Avalon Aero’s EASA Part 145 and EASA Part M sub part G approvals.

Avalon Aero are delighted to welcome Batman Motorsport & Aviation

May 2012 – Batman Motorsport & Aviation have chosen Avalon Aero to provide maintenance and support to their Cessna 421 Golden Eagle out of our Biggin Hill facility.

Richard Bateman, a local orthodontist with a passion for historic motor racing, regularly competes on the UK and European circuit. The acquisition of the Golden Eagle has allowed Richard and his team to travel to these events in more style and comfort than ever before.

Amongst his car fleet, the team often races their 1965 Mk I Lotus Cortina and Lotus Elan, both iconic of the period which has provided the team with endless opportunities to compete at the likes of Donington, Barcelona and Val de Vienne amongst others. Richard has also been invited to participate in the Goodwood Festival of Speed where he hopes to showcase his recently acquired 1990 Spice Group C prototype, whose only notable appearance was in the 1991 Le Man 24 hour meeting, where it was driven by the first all female Le Mans team.

We all wish Richard and his team every success and hope that the Golden Eagle continues to support his every need.

QinetiQ’s Bae 146/RJ arrives at Cranfield

The, recently purchased, BAe RJ100 arrived at Avalon Aero Cranfield last month from QinetiQ.

The aircraft, which will support the Empire Test Pilots school, will undergo a “C” check before commencing a programme of modifications, that will bring the aircraft up to the required standard, in order to pass the strict requirements that are needed for the gruelling flying conditions, that it will enjoy during operations.

The “C” check was the first task to be addressed, and then the Modification team, led by Martin Darling, were keen to get the job started, and the swift internal stripping of the aircraft was soon completed, and the modifications started.

The aircraft on completion will be based at Boscombe Down, where it will be supported both by our CAM and Maintenance departments...

Research into the violent Atlantic storm

8 December 2011 - Today's violent storm in Scotland is a reminder of the enormous impact that weather can have on our lives, and of the paramount need for accurate forecasts of high winds.

The Atmospheric Research aircraft (ARA), that Avalon Aero maintain and reconfigure for the Scientists, under the stewardship of Martin, our Technical Director, constantly collects information whilst on deployment, and is supported both in the UK and wherever it is deployed in the world, by the Elite team at Avalon Aero.

To help improve future forecasts, scientists from the UK academic community and the Met Office are using the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) research aircraft to probe this storm, using specialist instruments to measure the winds, temperature and humidity, and cloud particles.

The aircraft is also able to drop small instrument packages through the storm to measure profiles of wind, temperature and humidity. The data from these instruments was relayed back to Exeter by satellite link and used in producing the next forecast. Today it flew from Exeter north to Stornoway before sampling the south-west region of the storm, west of Scotland. Then after refuelling in Tees-side it measured the storm again over Eastern Scotland.

Bahrain Defence Force

The Bahrain Defence force’s 2 BAe RJ’s have come under the Continuing Airworthiness Management team, in Avalon Tech Services.

Steve is delighted to have won this contract, and knows that the experience that they have with these aircraft, having looked after the 2 Formula One 146’s and the Atmospheric research Aircraft, will allow him to plan cost effective maintenance whilst fully supporting them.

The thoroughness of the teams proposal together with established expertise in this field, made Avalon Tech Services the best qualified choice, and we are looking forward to a long and happy collaboration with them.

Happy Birthday ARA

Atmospheric Research Aircraft G-LUXE is 30 years old and still carrying out vital research work all over the globe. Fully supported and maintained by the Avalon Cranfield team it is currently just finishing a major annual check, that will see it continuing its research work into the next deployment.

On 30 September G-SSSH, the BAe-146-100 prototype made its first flight from Hatfield Aerodrome.

That aeroplane was then converted and flight tested as the BAe-146-300 prototype. It was re-registered as G-LUXE.

G-LUXE was then between 2001-2004 converted to the only BAe-146-301, which today celebrated its 30th birthday by flying its 629th science flight; the Royal Aeronautical Society also celebrated its 30th birthday on the cover of this month's issue of Aerospace Professional.

Avalon Golf Day

The annual Avalon Charity Golf event was extremely well supported again this year and lead to a wide variation of golfing prowess, and good humour, being on show.

Held at the Abbotsley Golf club in Cambridgeshire, the leading Aviation golf event of the year, saw nearly 30 participants commence the fiercely contested morning 9 hole Stapleford competition.

The afternoon 18 hole Stapleford, left few people in any doubt that the Aviation business is far too busy, to allow for enough golf practice, for any hope of consistent play.

However, 21 points saw Paul Turnbull from BAe sweep all before him in the morning and a magnificent 38 points in the afternoon left no doubt that James Lee from York University was the man of the day. Capturing the longest drive was Paul Turnbull and nearest to the pin was his compatriot Colin Jones at the par 3 18th.

The evening brought dinner brought out the Ladies in their finery, and an excellent meal followed by the traditional awarding of the days honours brought an excellent day to a close.

A huge thank you to Martin and Katy Darling for their efforts, was applauded by all those who enjoyed a fabulous day out.
